Which drone to choose in 2022 when you are a beginner?

Which drone to choose in 2022

If you are here it is because the drone for beginners interests you. Many of you tell me that you want to buy one too but don’t know which drone to choose . Know that there are dozens and dozens of different ones. DJI, Parrot, Hubsan, Xiaomi… we don’t know where to turn! So today I would like to introduce you to the best drones with onboard camera and live video feedback on the remote control, smartphone or tablet. I will also talk to you about the importance of starting to learn about mini drones, without a camera. On the other hand, I would not discuss FPV glasses (First Person View = First Person View) for an immersion flight.

But then, which drone to choose to start?

Now that you have read the table, here are some explanations to help you make a choice (or at least give you an idea of which one is right for you). To go further in the accompaniment, I invite you to ask yourself the following question: what is the essential criterion?

This is really a huge piece of advice I give because I’ve been there too, thanks to this type of mini/nano drones I’ve seen the difference in my progress as a remote pilot today. If you want to experience the sensations without assistance, without GPS or in-flight assistance from the controller, then I recommend buying a mini drone without a camera, like this Hubsan H107L.

For less than 50$, which drone to choose?

You will learn the first notions of space and also discover what it is like to fly in inversion (ie the drone will be in the air facing you, so the controls will be reversed). All this for less than 50€! It is super sturdy and will not be afraid of dropping it repeatedly. And then the last big advantage will be to be able to train indoors and outdoors. It is also on this that we train in training.
Do not hesitate to buy several spare batteries, they are really inexpensive and will allow you to train even longer.

Hubsan X4 H107L

  • Size: 12x12cm
  • Weight: 500 grams
  • Autonomy: 9 minutes
  • Maximum distance: 100 meters

  • For less than 100$

The masters of the category are still the mini drones of the Hubsan brand. The one I would recommend if you need to buy one to learn how to film would be the Hubsan X4 H502E model. It costs less than 100€ but the video rendering is really low (only 720p). It’s a good start to practice without risking too much money if you drop it. It has an integrated GPS and the Return to Home function that can be activated with a simple button on the remote control. As the battery has a low autonomy (about 10 minutes) I advise you to buy several at the same time.

Hubsan X4 H502E

  • Size: 6.81 x 6.81 x 2.49cm
  • Weight: 154 grams
  • HD camera: 720p
  • GPS and Return to Home function

For less than 200$

Undoubtedly the Tello from the manufacturer Ryze Robotics. Super stable, with a good autonomy of 13 minutes, it has a DJI flight controller therefore the assurance of a reliable and robust drone. Its 720p camera will take you into the world of photo and video at a price at the level of the daisies!
Lean otherwise on the H501S X4 if you have a slightly higher budget. Light and robust, it will bring you into the world of drones for an unbeatable investment. Obviously, do not expect to have extraordinary images (the integrated camera only films in 1080p) even if the flight autonomy is rather correct. Its primary objective will be, like small drones under 40€, to familiarize you with drones and to get used to the notions of space. But in addition, you will discover how to frame correctly thanks to the radio control.

Ryze Tello (DJI)

  • Size: 9.8 x 9.25 x 4.1cm
  • Weight: 80 grams
  • Autonomy: 13 minutes
  • Maximum distance: 100 meters
  • HD Camera: 720p 30fps

Hubsan H501S X4

  • Size: 28.6 x 28.6 x 17.8cm
  • Weight: 1.6kg
  • Autonomy: 18 – 20 minutes
  • Maximum speed: 40 km/h
  • Camera: 1080p

The winner of this category is undoubtedly the Chinese manufacturer with drones from the Mavic range. There was previously the Spark range but DJI stopped producing this model to replace it with the Mavic Mini, released in October 2019, then the DJI Mini 2 in November 2020 and finally the DJI Air 2S in April 2021. These drones at least 1000€ have very good on-board cameras, especially the newest one which has a 1 inch sensor with 20 megapixel resolution and video recording up to 5.4K!
And where the brand excels is that it has deployed five foldable drones. The DJI Mavic Pro (larger), Mavic Air, Mavic Mini and Mini 2, Mavic Air 2 and DJI Air 2S are perfections! Small, compact and very easy to handle, they are the new tools for bloggers, photographers or simple amateur travelers. When folded, they are so small that they fit with all their accessories in a backpack along with a camera and a computer. Or even a simple shirt pocket for the Mavic Mini and Mini 2. The remote control, which folds and unfolds so quickly, is essential for easy use because piloting on a smartphone is very unpleasant. It is supplied directly in the original package.
On the use side, they will be dedicated to drone enthusiasts wishing to obtain selfies from a new angle, embark on a semi-professional activity or obtain RAW photos (raw file) and images in 5.4K, 4K or 2.7K. In addition, they have many functions programmed directly into the devices that allow maneuvers to be carried out very easily.
I decided to include the Hubsan Zino 2 Plus portable version in this ranking. Another foldable drone on the market, it is really perfect if you want to remain discreet. The noise of the propellers in flight is low and its autonomy approaches 35 minutes. It also films in 4K like its competitors from DJI. Its design is also very nice and it seems to delight its users. A good investment therefore for a price below 500€, nothing to complain about!
Let’s not forget the Parrot Anafi. The French manufacturer has launched a very easy to use, foldable and light drone, which will make it easy to travel with a drone. The quality of the camera is really improved compared to the Bebop and it can above all turn 180°!
To end our selection of the best drones for travel, I suggest the Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020 foldable drone, which could therefore be suitable for your budget if you have less than 600€ to spend. Its announced autonomy of 35 minutes makes it possible to take beautiful shots in 4K, all in safety since many GPS help in the manipulation of the drone.

  • Autonomy: 35 minutes
  • Maximum speed: 65 km/h

Still in drones under 1000€, there are two very good brands but of lower notoriety. The Parrot Bebop 2.0 is compact and quite satisfactory in terms of image (even if I don’t really like this fisheye effect). Larger in size but with an excellent camera, the Yuneec Typhoon 4K will allow you to take semi-professional shots without any problem. Honestly, these two drones are no longer really references today, but I thought it was important to present them to you in order to give you a wide choice.

More experienced or even professional photographers and videographers will surely look into the Phantom range, which offers a wide choice with high-performance HD, UHD and 4K cameras. The best today remains the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. Beware all the same of its weight and size, which are quite restrictive. But this drone model has so many technologies that it releases all its power for the realization of incredible shots!

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0

  • Size: 35 cm wingspan
  • Weight: 1.4kg
  • Autonomy: 30 minutes
  • Maximum speed: 72 km/h
  • Camera: Cinema 4K 60fps or 4K 60fps

Released at the end of 2018, the Mavic range offers a wide choice of models depending on your level, including the DJI Mavic 2. The pro version has become, for me, the best option at all levels. As nimble and foldable as its predecessor, it’s definitely the best camera drone on the market. So if you don’t know which drone to choose for your professional activity or simply out of a passion for super beautiful photos and videos, the Mavic 2 is the one for you!
In partnership with the Hasselblad brand, the Chinese manufacturer has succeeded in integrating a 1-inch 20-megapixel CMOS sensor (4 times larger than that of the first Mavic Pro). And above all a lens with an adjustable aperture from f/2.8 to f/11 (the first one was fixed). Great for managing shots in darker places (sunrise or sunset for example).
In addition, the transmission signal between the radio control and the drone has been developed to be even more efficient and allow increased precision in maneuvers in the air.
Other huge advantages, multi-directional obstacle detection sensors ensure safety during flight. The drag in flight has been reduced compared to the first Mavic, which allows a much higher noise reduction and maximum speed. And the battery life goes up to 31 minutes.

It is no longer marketed today by the brand following the release of its successor.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro

  • Size: 21.4 x 9.1 x 8.4 cm (folded) and 32.2 x 24.2 x 8.4 cm (unfolded)
  • Weight: 907 grams
  • Autonomy: 29 – 31 minutes
  • Maximum speed: 72 km/h
  • Camera: 4K 30fps at 100Mbps

Since the end of 2021, DJI has released its Mavic 3 which greatly exceeds the Mavic 2 Pro in video/photo quality, autonomy, calibration… Be careful, however, it is really recommended for very experienced videographers / photographers who will fully exploit its capabilities

My opinion on which drone to choose in 2022?

You will have understood it since you are browsing our blog, we are highlighting the DJI brand which for me is the best on the market at the moment (we don’t have any share with them, we promise!). No competitor today is able to come close to him. Due to the performance and depth of the product range, the reliability of drones brings serenity and safety during flights. All are equipped with high-tech sensors. The controller’s intelligent flight modes help to pilot easily even if you are a beginner and allow you to focus your attention on the camera. But the big advantage revolves around stunning photo and video rendering.
Buying the DJI brand is an investment you won’t regret. Prices remain high, yes, but you know where you are putting your money.
Note that I am not talking about GoPro at all in this article. Yet they had launched at the time, a great product, the GoPro Karma which unfortunately suffered from major reliability problems. Production is now stopped and there will certainly be none left on the market for a while.
I insist on starting the learning process on a Hubsan mini drone. It will probably be difficult at first to tame it, but believe me, when you master it well, other devices with sensors, flight modes and other advanced functions will no longer hold any secrets.

So, have you made your choice? Tell me in the comments below?
Don’t forget to share, it might interest your friends! See you soon. arthur
